Sharing books

Several months ago, my buddy Pauly sent me a copy of “Another Roadside Attraction.” It was a book that, much to my surprise, I had never read.

Pauly enclosed a note indicating that he and the previous reader had signed the inside cover. He directed me to read the book and then do the same. I finished the book a couple of months ago, but forgot Pauly’s orders. Now, I remember. It’s my turn to pass on the book.

Obviously, this is a book that in some cases is, and in most cases should be required reading. Since I mised it on the first go-’round, maybe you did, too. Rather than search high and low for people who haven’t read the book, I thought I’d open it up to you folks.

Send an e-mail to the address under the advertising section on the right and tell me why I should send you this book. Winner gets the book and a copy of my worthless signature (not to mention Pauly’s sig, which may actually be valuable someday).

Oh wait – I’m supposed to justify this. Ummm… how about…

I got a Bronze Star in Iraq.

    Do I win?

Damn! I can’t compete with a Bronze Star, but I read real good and record concerts that I share with you. Oh and I could use a sample of your signature for a little “investment scheme” I am working on. Ignore any calls you may get about new lines of credit.

Let’s face it — while I may travel this country far and wide for days and weeks at a time, pulled like a tractor beam into various and sundry locales begging me to pay a nominal fee and gaze upon the bizarre for awhile… I *am* a roadside attraction.

That and I got you that Otis badge.

    Or, some haiku:
    Wouldn’t it feel good
To know your book’s in the hands
    Of a non reader

Because I have little more than a passing interest in the work, and it will sit on a shelf, gathering dust for years. As my gaze passes briefly over it, I will at times feel tremendous guilt for my procrastination. Its place in cultural history will be wasted upon me as it sits unread.

Also, you can just hand it to me when you move to Toronto.

    Wait, this isn’t an e-mail, I guess I’m disqualified.

Ummm… is there a winner? I’d just like to know because I’m putting off re-reading Shut Up and Deal for the 4th time.
