RIP Tim Russert

I’d like to think journalism won’t die with him, but Tim Russert was capital “J” journalism’s face and voice.    I still believe in journalism, but it will be a lot harder without Russert at the helm.

No question… Tim Russert was, perhaps, the best there ever was in his particular arena (Sunday Morning talk and political coverage). He was always fair but always tough.

    He will be greatly missed.

Putting aside how sobering this is for an overweight dad, it is a jolt to the system that a life this productive would be snuffed out. Truth and taking the tough road are found less and less. Losses like this accelerate the decline.

When I heard the news, my jaw dropped and I couldn’t think of a single thing to say. My 11-year-old, however, exclaimed, “Holy shit, Mom. This isn’t possible.”

    Yeah, what he said.

Well, Russert was more than a Sunday morning political voice. He was head of their Washington bureau and that’s a nut-buster of a job with a good 60+ hour a week work schedule.

His book about his dad –Big Russ — defined the man and a bygone era that made Tim the man he was. And that was one hell of a man — even ignoring his journalistic chops.
