Free book!

It’s been a while since I gave away a book. Seems like now is as good a time as any.

Back in December 2007, I sat in the D-terminal at McCarran International eating a tuna sandwich. Blood and I were getting ready to take the long flight home after a long weekend in Vegas. As we killed time before our redeye, our old friend BG walked up.

He sat with us for a bit before pulling a book from his bag and handing it to me as a sort of thank you for something I’d done earlier.

I sank into the book. When I’d finished, I wished I wasn’t. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon was simply fantastic.

I know a lot of you have read it. For those of you who haven’t, the comments and my e-mail box are open. Once again, the best appeal gets you the book for free. Thanks again to BG for the chance to read the book and for telling me to pass it on to someone else.

Can I have it? I already have one copy and would like another to make bookends!

My current bookend is a golem!

One of my all time favorite books. I highly recommend it.

You should write a little comment about when you read the book and when you got it on the inside and just keep passing it along. I tend to put my email inside asking for people to pass me a note if they liked the book…it just goes on and on.

I read it in Prague after visiting the cemetary where the golem was supposedly buried. I think it won the Pulitzer, no? Beautifully written.

How timely. I just saw a rerun of the Simpson’s golem and their building of a girl friend for him. Must be one of those 7 degree things…

I would like the book because it has lots of pictures.

Sigh, that’s a book I keep meaning to read but I’m intimidated. Finally time to bite the bullet and pick up a copy.

    Dear Otis,

As you know, I’ve been reading you since 2002. I remember you before you had that adorable little boy and before you started a poker blog. I’ve alwasy thought you were awesome in the most awesomest way possible. Cooler than cool, and definitely too cool for me. But I kept reading because I was hoping your brilliance would somehow rub off on me just a little. Sure, I gave up that ship a while back, but I still kept reading because you’ve become a sort of touchstone to the days when blogging was shiny, fresh, and new for me. And for most people. Plus, you’re still a damn good read.

That said, with back surgery looming on the near horizon, I’m really going to need something to distract me between doses of dilaudid and demerol. Something to entertain me and keep me from driving the nurses batshit. This book sounds like just the ticket.

Can I? Please? Pretty please. With crushed vicodin on top?

P.S. I know “always” is spelled with the s before the y in most cases, but apparently my late night out with the gargoyle, pirate, flapper, and the others has rendered me stoopid for the day.

I keep trying to get F-Train to read it.

    But he doesn’t read fiction.

    Why is he my boyfriend?
