Bahamian rhapsody

(Nassau, Bahamas)–My cab driver from Paradise Island drove a coffee can with wheels and a squeaky horn. He careened around the corners in the Bahamian slums and drove like I was late for the airport. In fact, I was early and trying to eat some breakfast. I bought a breakfast sandwich at Jamba Juice, and that was good luck. I needed to use at least one of my hands to keep from bouncing around inside the cabbie’s can.

He drove up fast on the side of a sputtering car and screamed out the window.

“You need to drive straight to the junkyard,” he yelled and sped around the vehicle. For the next 20 minutes, he pushed his minivan’s abilities as he passed three cars at once on a two-lane highway. He rarely slowed down or stopped. The two times he did, I looked out to see a bar called Cocktails and Dreams and then Anna Nicole Smith’s grave site. They impressed me equally.

And now I sit in the ever-comfortable Nassau airport. I’m fairly certain it is run by a latter day Gulag. It could be that I’m tired. Either way, the only thing keeping me from running up to the family across…

The above 200 words were written in the Nassau, Bahamas airport under the influence of too little sleep and 5 security lines. As I tried to complete the last sentence, Internet service disappeared and I just turned off my computer. Suffice it to say, I’m home for a few days.
