Charity Worley homicide update: Agents at the door

To have survived the pain to this point was an act of will Linda Casey wasn’t sure she had, which makes recent developments in the investigation into her daughter’s homicide all the more difficult to understand. A few weeks back, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation arrived on Casey’s doorstep.

Before Casey left her home to sit through a nearly five-hour interview, she was almost relieved. After 16 months with no answers from Henderson County detectives, the arrival of the SBI was proof that the investigation had not been shelved. Finally, it seemed as though the case might move forward.

Casey thought, “They are working.”

Nine hours later, Casey sat shaking with one thought in her head. “There are no more cruel or meaner people alive than the SBI.”

The intervening hours between relief and fury contained among the most painful moments Casey and her family have experienced since Charity Worley’s death. The SBI showed up at Casey’s door unannounced. Casey, still in her pajamas, was one of three people grilled by the SBI that afternoon. The other two? Casey’s surviving children, Chris and Lindsey.

Casey and her family had reached the point they could finally talk about Worley without falling apart.

“We can love her life and not relive her death,” Casey said.

Now, Casey says, they are being treated like suspects.

Charity Worley

It’s been 17 months since Casey’s family found Worley bloody and dead outside their Hendersonville, NC home. Worley went outside to warm up her car on a cold December morning and never came back inside. Somebody beat her to death with a pipe, and to this day investigators have not been able to identify who is responsible for the homicide.

In fact, if what Casey believes is true, the investigation has regressed to square one. Rather than investigators from the Sheriff’s Office showing up to talk, SBI agents are appearing unannounced and with massive accusations.

“They terrorized my son and daughter,” Casey said.

According to Casey, the SBI’s intent on that Thursday was to get the 24-year-old Lindsey to confess.

Worley’s little sister lived with Casey and Worley, and though she had seen Worley’s body the morning of the beating, Lindsey had yet to see the autopsy photos. That changed when, according to Casey, the SBI agents in charge of the interview pulled out a file of photos and thrust them in front of the victim’s little sister.

“They showed her a picture of Charity with her head shaved to show the extent of the head wounds and told her it would go easier if she confessed now,” Casey said. “It was mean. Just mean.”

To an outsider, what happened might seem normal. Lindsey had been the first to find Worley’s body on the morning of the homicide. She was a relative. What’s more, Lindsey was in the middle of overcoming some problems of her own. No one could criticize an investigator’s interest in Lindsey as a potential suspect, at least in the beginning of the investigation 17 months ago.

Casey, however, now looks on it as cruel. So much time has passed since the death. The family has endured the pain of not knowing who killed Worley or why. Now, they find themselves at the center of the investigation and with the SBI’s sights set on the victim’s little sister.

“’Lindsey can only cry,” Casey said “She is scared. She is a single mother who has been told all evidence leads to you. The photos of Charity were horrendous. They were close-up headshots with blood running down her face. She is intubated, bruised, nose broken, not the way you would like to remember your sister.”

Casey’s family has hired an attorney and is currently waiting to see who shows up at the door next.

I guess my only surprise here is that it’s taken, as you’ve said, long for the harsh light of investigation to be turned on the family. There’s the old saying about the most logical conclusion being correct. It makes most sense that the killer was someone who knew her. It makes most sense that the killer was one of the family members who was there that morning. It’s very common that the one who “finds the body” is the killer.

But I guess the question you are asking is why now? What took them so long?

When it’s all said and done, I won’t be surprised if a family member ends up being arrested.

I think this whole situation is an absolute tragedy! This family has been through absolute hell and high water! Its a shame to have a child, sister, wife and mother stolen away from your life, but then to turn and point the a finger at the people whom love her the most? I think its a very sad and unfortunate manner that the SBI feel they should torcher the only people whom new Charity! The people who grew up with her know, there is no way that Charity could have deserved the devestational and sick thing that happened to her. She was the most warm hearted and loving individual that you could lay eyes on!!! I hate to have to say this, but who do you think taught her these values and morals???? HER FAMILY!!!! I think the SBI should get off their tales and figure out a way to find the REAL Killer and stop harrasing innocent victims whom have suffered way to much and far too long, because they wont do THEIR JOB!!! God bless to Linda and all the family! We love and miss you Charity! I know you are smiling down on us from HEAVEN!

I think it’s odd that they are focusing on the family after all of this time, however her husband who only 3 days, YES! I said 3 days, after she was murdered, posted “For those that knew Charity well, know that she doesn’t have to suffer anymore.”
He’s had too many girlfriends to count. Walks around and talks of how blessed he’s been to the written world. However, only talks negatively of her. How are all of the people who loved her so much still suffering, and he’s walking around as if it’s just another day in the neighborhood?! Yes, he was out of the country, but have they investigated him? He could have had e-mail addresses that he only used overseas to contact the killer. He has lots of family that, as true southern family’s know, family is thicker than water. So if he can talk as much crap about her to people that knew her, whether a little or not at all, imagine what he could have been saying to his own family and close friends when she was with us. I don’t know who he had do it, but I know he was involved with every fiber of my being. I know he had something to do with it. It’s just too easy for him to move on. So why doesn’t the SBI look into him and harrass him the same way. Just because you are overseas, doesn’t mean you are away from technology. It just means he had a way to cover his tracks and had someone do it for him.

I think MJ raises a very good question.

  6. Katey says:

I agree with CJ. The family, (Linda, Lindsey, Charity) was not what it seemed. History of lies, drugs, stealing, fighting are well known to other family members.

After listening to Bo’s video I have strong feelings about who he may be talking about and feel not all information he mentioned was as it really is. Perhaps he did that to throw people off??

  7. Katey says:

Are Bruce and MJ the same person? They posted the same thing 2 days apart. Have a feeling that Maranatha is the same person as well.

There were 4 people that day that had to see the awful pictures of a dear and loved family member and they also accused the person who was conviently left out.Really why do you keep defending yourself screw these people and Law enforcement innocent people have nothing to hide and truth will prevail.Let them dig its their job but dont defend yourself anymore.Charity is the only thing that matters in this case it is about HER murder, she and God know the truth trust that they will see it comes out.LINDA HELP THEM FIND THE KILLER DO WHAT THEY ASK AND STOP FIGHTING THEM ALL THE TIME THEY ARE THE ONLY HOPE CHARITY HAS FOR JUSTICE IT MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE YOU DONT WANT THEM CAUGHT WHEN YOU DONT COOPERATE I UNDERSTAND YOUR REASONS BUT PUT YOUR FEELINGS ASIDE AND THINK OF WHAT CHARITY WOULD DO FOR ANYONE SHE LOVED

  10. Katey says:

The article doesn’t say anything about 4 people being there, only Linda, Lindsey and Chris. Who was the 4th person? Just curious.

Mj and bruce…I want to tell you that you both are jokes…you have no idea what i’ve been through and continue to endure..It is so easy to look at someone elses life and think you have it all figured out…you are both ignorant! I have been left to raise my son alone…I would love to see either one of you try that one…and to have to listen to him everyday ask for his mommy…yeah..my life is just a walk in the park…I don’t know who you think you are…I have kept my mouth shut throughout this entire investigation until now…those statements are the most ignorant and hurtful comments i’ve ever heard. The police did look at me for your information….Maybe you should know your facts a little better before you put someone on blast!!!! And yes…I do feel very Blessed for what I do have in my life! My wife and I had our share of problems that are none of any of you guys buisness…but that doesn’t change the fact that I loved her! She was a wonderful mother to my son and He is the one who will suffer the loss of her the most…You people should all think about one day her son will be old enough to read what you are writing…how bout you have a little respect!

  13. Karle says:

Way to go Jake.I know that you love Charity and I know she loves you and I wish she were here to see how far you have come.I know that people are pathetic but they will get theirs in the end.J will never be short on memories or stories about his momma. She was a force to be reckoned with and just as sweet and smart as she was beautiful,he will always know that even if I have to tell him everyday.I love you guys so much and just give me the word and I will eat these scum for breakfast.

  14. Betsy Olmeda says:

I think everyone is trying to find who did this and people like Katey are here to attack. I see everyone’s viewpoints on here, but Katey, you’ve posted on a few of these articles, and all you do is drag out negative info on the family. Those of us who love Charity, want justice. Those of us that love her still to this day, suffering every day she is not here with us. To see new pictures, message, laugh, vent, share ways to uplift each other, yes, we are the ones who want true justice. None of us are perfect, nor does the family act as if they are. So stop trying to throw more salt on their wounds and grow up!! How would you feel if someone sat here and drug out all of your skeletons in your closet?? Especially while trying to live out each day and make the best of it, knowing this is one of the worst situations you could ever have to live through. Who cares what drugs, cheating, lies, arguments, etc happened when she was with us! WHO CARES!!! Nothing that she did, deserves this kind of punishment. NOTHING!! What matters now is finding justice and having closure. I pray that God shows mercy on your poor soul and that He gives you strengths to fight your demons that keep poisoning you with your negativity! Linda, you know I love you!! You know that I love Charity to this day! I pray for peace in all of our hearts, that love Charity! She will always be a part of our hearts and lives!! I am thankful to have been blessed with the time I had with her.

  15. Linda Casey says:

A little update on what has gone on in the years since this posted. Charity’s killer has still gone unfound. The henderson County Sheriff Department have harrassed until we are ready to be pushed NO MORE.
On December 17, 2008 I endured every mother’s nightmare. I was faced with my child, that I bore, raised, and loved beaten to death. No matter how hard I breathed for her I was answered with her blood bubbling back into my mouth and over my face. Live with that!! Try standing in an ER with you baby and closing her wide open eyes and they pop back open. her beautiful grey eyes clouded and lifeless. Hold her cold hand and beg her to come back and she remains cold and lifeless.
1st. we were forced to look at autopsy photos and yes forced is the word. Pictures of her scalp peeled back and her battered brain exposed. Then told to confess and they would go easy? Nightmares still haunt us both.
2nd We were interviewed by Bo Barton for hours, in our home, in a congenial atmosphere. Imagine our surprise when he gets on TV and says we were uncooperative!!! No, we did not go to the reenactment because they gave us 2 hours notice and Lindsey could not get off work.
3rd. Bo Barton shows up at my home several weeks later saying he has “prayed” about what happened and wants to apologize. which he does profusely. He explains that they are awaiting a phone call with the latest forensic evidence. He “takes” a phone call and proceeds to “break the news” to me that they have found Lindsey’s fingerprints on the murder weapon and are going to arrest her. I fall to pieces!! I was told if I would write a statement saying she was unbalanced at the time a victim of drugs and alcohol, the press would see her in a softer light. I did not write anything!! Two hours later, after Lindsey is in total confusion as to how her fingerprints were on the weapon we find out Bo Barton lied. Her fingerprints were not on the weapon and he just wanted me to write and sign a statement.
4th.. sheriff Rick Davis tells us “He will get us”
5th.. Detective Sergeant Andy Anderson tells us “I will not be going away, I will be your worst nightmare!”
6th.. family members are shown a picture with a long dark object in the background and they say they have produced proof that the murder weapon came from in the house therefore we had to have done it. It tore the family apart. jake refused to let us see Jayden, My son did not speak to me for a year, My brother still does not. and doubt reigned. A year and a half later I finally get one of the detectives to talk to me. Jeff Brooks, I see the picture and am myself rattled. I was told I could be a witness or an accomplice. I go home and look this picture up on my thumbdrive which is where they got the picture. It is just one of a series of pictures. The other pictures show a long GREEN plastic shower curtain rod. Needless to say I am furious!!
7th.. 2 detectives show up at my mom’s in Transylvania County and I am there with my grand daughter. We are told they are looking for Lindsey and I need to keep Emma with me. There has been a DSS call.
After having said they do not know where Lindsey lives they go directly to her house and tell her that there has been a DSS call and DSS is on the way to get her daughter. However……. if she will cooperate and confess they will “call them off” Lindsey promptly tells them to bring them on and she will gladly talk to them in the presence of our attorney. They want no part of that. They leave her with the statement DSS would be there within the hour and if she changes her mind let them know. WE checked with DSS there was no call. They made the tale up out of thin air.
This is the kind of harrassment we have recieved this along with countless road stops and calls. At what point if they have no real evidence do they say
“maybe we are wrong” and start looking at other suspects. Tunnel Vision is a real violation of my rights!!

  16. Linda Casey says:

It has been 5 long years since my daughter was murdered in our driveway. There have been no arrests and only harassment from the Sheriff Dept. They have ripped our family to shreds. they have said things that are wild and far fetched, when proven wrong they don’t go back to the family members they told these things to and say “oh we were mistaken.” They leave it a status quo. If the killer was caught today things have been said and done that will forever leave a rift in this family. This person has taken more than Charity from us, he/she has taken a legacy of family that we all thought was sacred. My heart is heavy as I remember with aching pain my daughter, and tears as I see what remains of a family unit, forever torn apart.
